Te Hokinga Mai - Out of Gate Reintegration Service

Te Hokinga Mai commenced on 1st July 2020 and is targeted at over 400 tāne and wahine a year who are serving sentences of two years and under. It is technically a ‘light touch’ service where we work with the tāne and whānau before and post-release to ensure they are connected to the benefits system, have housing and have their basic needs met.

However, as a kaupapa Māori provider we have enhanced this service to include more than this and are committed to working with whānau and tāne in a more supportive way. We are making huge inroads regarding assessment and uptake by tāne who are seeing the value of Te Hokinga Mai.

Te Hokinga Mai has two areas of service delivery:

Prison-based remand programme

This focuses on helping tāne in custody on remand to understand reintegration and put together their plan using the 5 Pou of Kahungunu Health Services. They are also introduced to the services available within Kahungunu Health Services.

Community Reintegration service

Our team of Pou manaaki help our tāne and wāhine with the implementation of their reintegration plan upon release back into the community.

Te Hokinga Mai is special to Kahungunu Health Services as it is our first partnership with the major iwi of the East Coast, Te Rununga o Turanganui a Kiwa (The iwi of Turanganui Ngai Tamanuhiri, Rongowhakaata and Te Aitanga a Mahaki) and Te Runanganui a Ngāti Porou.

We have also partnered with PARS in Auckland which has the Northern Region contract for Te Hokinga Mai.
