During the transformative era of the 1990s, New Zealand's healthcare landscape underwent notable shifts, particularly in the realm of Health Service Provision. This period marked a pivotal moment as midwives assumed greater autonomy in their practice, representing a significant milestone in maternal and infant care. Concurrently, CHOICES emerged as a beacon of innovation and progress in healthcare delivery. Formally established on November 10, 1995, under the name Kahungunu Health Services Charitable Trust, our organization swiftly became ingrained within the community fabric, earning widespread recognition and trust as Choices. Through our dedicated efforts and commitment to excellence, Choices continues to play a vital role in enhancing healthcare accessibility and quality for all.
Our organization began its journey with a clear mission: to support families, with a special focus on Māori mothers and their infants. Our primary aim was to provide essential assistance to expectant mothers, ensuring they received the support they needed during pregnancy and beyond. One of our earliest contracts was dedicated to aiding pregnant Māori mothers and their babies, commonly referred to as "Pepi" in Māori, and we are proud to say that we still uphold this commitment today. Through this contract, we continue to extend our helping hand to Māori and Pacific mothers, offering vital support as they navigate the joys and challenges of early parenthood with their newborns.
Central to our mission is the preservation and integration of Māori traditions and cultural elements into our services. We recognize the rich heritage and significance of Māori culture and are dedicated to honoring and incorporating these traditions into the care and support we provide. Through our steadfast commitment to upholding Māori values and practices, we strive to create an environment that respects and celebrates cultural diversity while ensuring the well-being of all families we serve.
"There is an apathy and a torpor pervading the whole of the Māori world, and the language is its victim"
- Sir Tīmoti Kāretu
